Successful Implants May Require Bone Grafting Treatments

With the fall season coming around, is your mouth ready for the numerous meals and treats that await? If you have any lost or missing teeth, eating some foods can prove too difficult a task. Tooth loss has also been proven to destabilize our gums, cause tooth slippage, and increase your risk for gum disease and tooth decay. Thus, it is important to have the missing teeth replaced as soon as possible.

A highly effective tooth replacement treatment to consider is a dental implant. However, dental implants are installed directly into your jawbone, which must be strong enough to support the implant. If your jawbone is too weak or frail to hold an implant, the use of a bone grafting procedure can be used to help strengthen it.

A bone grafting procedure works by taking a bone graft from another area of your body and grafting it onto your jawbone. Artificial bone grafts can often be used as well. Typically, bone grafting treatments are reserved for situations in which your jaw has no chance of functioning properly otherwise in the event of holding a dental implant. Bone grafts may take a few months to heal and strengthen before a dental implant can be inserted.
