Halitosis: A Common Problem

Halitosis, also referred to as “bad breath,” afflicts up to 50% of adults at some point in their lives. There are a number of possible causes for bad breath, which range from the mild to the very serious. Before assuming the worst, however, consider these common causes of halitosis.

There are many kinds of bacteria that live in your mouth. These microflora are often the cause of oral health problems, including halitosis. There are a lot of bacteria which live on your tongue. When you floss and brush your teeth, be sure to clean your tongue. You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a tongue-scraper.

Some foods, such as onions and garlic, contain compounds that cause bad breath. To help reduce this, it is vital that you clean your mouth thoroughly after eating these foods. Some smells are very persistent, and so are best avoided on a date or a job interview.

If you clean your teeth through brushing and flossing every day–including cleaning your tongue–yet still deal with consistent halitosis, it would be wise to consult your dentist. Persistent bad breath can be a sign of advanced periodontal disease or other serious medical conditions.
